The project “O Círculo da Matemática do Brasil” of Instituto TIM organized on September, 22nd at Harvard University a meeting with the founders of The Math Circle, professors Bob and Ellen Kaplan and Professor Amartya Sen, Nobel Prize in Economics and creator of the HDI, to discuss the relationship between mathematics education and human development. The debate also had the participation of Professor Stephen Kennedy, editor for the American Mathematics Association. The recording of the debate, structured as a webinar, counted with the presence of some professors and students of the University and was broadcast to registered participants from over 15 countries.

The debate tackled issues such as correct classroom methodologies for teaching mathematics, monitoring of education, the trade-off between promoting knowledge versus stimulating reasoning, the implications for teaching mathematics for the promotion of development and the importance of international cooperation for the development of math education.
