Weak math teaching is one of the great obstacle to the advancement of Science and Technology in Brazil. According to the Brazilian Ministry of Education and Science, only 42% of 3rd grade students in elementary schools are proficient in the basic operations such as addition and subtraction. The 2013 Test ABC showed that 70,8% of 8-year-old children do not have sufficient knowledge of mathematics for their age. In the PISA ranking, it is in mathematics where Brazil is doing worst (57o place in the 2009 PISA).
